Tommie men get seven top-10 finishes at U of M track

The St. Thomas men's track and field team started its 2002 indoor season with a group of athletes at the University of Minnesota's Northwest Open. Coach Steve Mathre's team had seven top-10 finishes in the non-scored meet, which included Division I, II and III competitors.
All-American sprinter Roman Cress returned after a season layoff and took fourth in the 60 meters (6.94); Craig Benson was second (8.43) and Joe McCarney was fifth (8.70) in the 60 hurdles; Cory Fusco was fifth in the 800 (1:59.35); Brian Hauge was ninth in the mile (4:33.44); Ben Garbe was fifth in the triple jump (42-11); and McCarney was seventh in the pole vault (13-3).
Also, several Tommies competed in the Deveopmental division. Wining their events were Andrew Hilliard in the 400 meters (50.85) and Bryce Beckman in the 600 (1:23.77).
The Tommies host Bethel and some UST alumni athletes next Friday night in Coughlan Fieldhouse.
