Men's Track gets one first, six seconds at UWEC

The St. Thomas men's track and field team had athletes in three meets over the weekend and hit two NCAA provisional qualifying times.
The Tommies took a partial team to the non scored UW-Eau Claire Border Battle. Senior hurdler Craig Benson won the 55 hurdles in an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 7.79. The NCAA automatic time in that event is 7.59.
In Friday's University of Minnesota Snowshoe Open, junior All-American Andrew Hilliard eclipsed the provisional standard in the 400 meters with a fifth-place time of 49.94, just under the 50.00 provisional mark and just off the 49.00 automatic time.
St. Thomas had four individual runners-up -- Jake Barkley in the 55 (6.66), Tom Hart in the 200 (22.93), Jason Overson in the 1,000 (2:35.36), Sean Brenckman in the 3,000 (8:57.06). UST also placed second in the 4x200 relay (1:31.70) and the 4x400 relay (3:22.75).
Third-place finishers for the Tommies were Carson Glad in the 55 (6.69), Brock Stepan in the 3,000 (8:57.20), Joe McCarney in the pole vault (14-3 1-2) and Aaron Johnson in the weight throw (47-1).
Fourth-place finishers for UST were Hilliard in the 55 (6.70), Shawn Sharpe in the 400 (52.12) and Cory Fusco in the 1,000 (2:36.12). Placing fifth were Bryce Beckman in the 800 (2:00.69), Brian Hauge in the 1,000 (2:36.20) and Johnson in the shot put (41-5 1-2). Taking sixths were Hart in the 55 (6.78), Shawn Lohman in the 600 (1:26.38), Kevin Wright in the 1,500 (4:11.54) and Mike Madison in the triple jump (41-2 1-2).

Beckman took third in the long jump (20-9 1-4); McCarney placed fourth in the pole vault (14-0); Will Kratz was sixth in the 60 hurdles (9.14); Overson was sixth in the mile (4:25.90); Peter Bernardy was eighth in the 200 (23.54) and seventh in the 600 (1:24.15); Bryan Limmer was eighth in the 600 (1:26.89); Jason Schweitz (50.23), Glad (51.04), Hart (51.92), Jason Villar (52.02) and Steve Rajewsky (52.25) placed 7-8-9-10-11 in the 400.

Andy Jummer and Nick Maddox placed fourth and fifth in the 5,000 in 14:59.38 and 15:09.48. Also running were Levi Severson (7th, 15:12.74), Nate Coleman (8th, 15:13.11) and Brian Preus (9th, 15:18.59).
