Toms have 10 in NCAA track starting Thursday

St. Thomas will be represented by 10 athletes in eight events at the NCAA Division III Track and Field Championships for men and women, which run Thursday through Saturday at Macalester College in St. Paul.

Tommie women's coach Joe Sweeney has one qualifier on the women's side -- Karolien Bastiaens, who's seeded 12th in the pole vault. She will compete Friday at 10:30 a.m.

UST men's coach Steve Mathre has nine athletes qualified in seven events:
--The Toms' 4x100 relay is seeded third (prelims 6:35 p.m. Thursday, finals 1:40 p.m. Saturday). The team consists of Carson Glad, Roman Cress, Tom Hart and Andrew Hilliard.
--UST's 4x400 relay is seeded ninth (prelims 7:45 p.m. Thursday, finals 5:15 p.m. Saturday). The team consists of Glad, Justin Hall, Hilliard and Jason Schwietz.
--Craig Benson is seeded eighth in the 110 hurdles (prelims 6:15 p.m. Friday, finals 2:20 p.m. Saturday);
--Brian Preus is seeded eighth in the 10,000 (finals 8 p.m. Thursday);
--Joe McCarney is seeded 10th in the decathlon (starts Thursday 11:30 a.m., concludes Friday);
--Cress is seeded 12th in both the 100 (prelims Friday 7:25 p.m., finals 3:25 p.m. Saturday) and 200 dashes (prelims Thursday 4 p.m., finals 4:30 p.m. Saturday)
--Glad is seeded 17th in the 100 (prelims Friday 7:25 p.m., finals 3:25 Saturday).

McCarney competes Thursday at 11:30 in the 100 meters, 12:15 in the long jump. 1:45 in the shot put, 3:15 in the high jump and 5:55 in the 400 meters, and Friday at 12:30 in the 110 hurdles, 1:15 in the discus. 2:45 in the pole vault, 6:45 in the javelin and 8:10 p.m. in the 1,500.

In all, 34 MIAC athletes representing nine institutions will compete in 31 events, including three who have qualified in three events -- Gustavus' Jerry Washington (100, 200 and 4x100); and St. Thomas' Cress (100, 200 and 4x100) and Glad (100, 4x100 and 4x400). Two-event qualifiers from the conference are Gustavus' Luke Speltz (shot put, discus) and Ryan Hoag (100, 4x100); and St. Thomas' Hilliard (4x100, 4x400).
