Men's Track wins four-team Border Battle

Joe Thomas and Roman Cress were double winners to lead the St. Thomas men's indoor track and field team to the team title at Saturday's four-team Minnesota-Wisconsin Border Battle at St. Olaf.

The Tommies won 11 events and scored 204.5 points to outscore St. Olaf (161), UW-Stout (127.5) and UW-Eau Claire (114).

Thomas won the high jump (6-6 3-4) and triple jump (44-5 1-2). Cress won the 55 (6.53) and 200 (22.48). The Toms also swept the 4x200 (1:32.45) and 4x400 (3:22.83).

Matt McLaughlin won the weight throw (47-11 1-4) and was third in the shot put (44-3 1-2; Craig Benson won the 55 hurdles (8.14); Levi Severson (4:02.29) and Brian Preus (4:02.76) went 1-2 in the 1,500; Bryce Beckman just missed a career best as he won the 600 (1:14.29); and Cory Fusco won the 800 (1:57.79).

Seconds were scored by Mike Draxton in the high jump (6-0 3-4), Jason Simmons in the 55 hurdles (8.47) and Robert Ware in the 400 (50.49). Ware also took third in the 200 (23.29)

Other thirds were scored by Adam Aaro in the long jump (20-7 3-4); Andrew Kisielius in the triple jump (43-5 3-4); Chris Mattke in the 55 (6.80); Sahun Sharpe in the 400 (50.76); and Will Hawthorne in the 3,000 (8:51.85).

Fourths were scored by Jason Larson in the 55 hurdles (8.80), Sahwn Lohman in the 600 (1:16.07), Andrew Hilliard in the 400 (50.86), Ben Hauge in the 1,000 (2:34.92) and Jerrod Gray in the 200 (23.54).

Fifths were scored by Gabe Skelly in the weight throw (40-2), Kisielius in the long jump (20-2 1-2), Brock Stepan in the 1,500 (4:03.46), Jason Overson in the 1,000 (2:37.36), Ben Sanders in the 800 (2:02.28) and Sharpe in the 200 (23.55).

Sixths were scored by Peter Rosholt in the weight throw (41-1 1-2), Larson in the pole vault (13-3 1-2), J.J. Kirby in the high jump (5-10 3-4), Andy Dauer in the 55 hurdles (10.42), Kyle Fischer in the 55 dash (6.90) and Jason Peterson in the 200 (23.65).

The Toms compete Saturday at the University of Minnesota Invitational. They will compete in less than three weeks at the MIAC Championships at St. Olaf.
