Tommie men, women seek MIAC track titles

Friday update:
Rain, wind and cool weather has greeted competitors at the MIAC Track & Field Championships today in Moorhead. The men's pole vault competition has been moved inside.
Friday's schedule includes men's finals in the hammer, pole vault, long jump, discus, 10,000, and 4x800 relay, and women's finals in the javelin, shot put, long jump, high jump, 10,000, and 4x800 relay. Friday prelims will be held for men and women in the 100, 200, 400, 800, 1,500, 4x100 relay, 110/100 hurdles and 400 hurdles.
Saturday's schedule includes men's finals in the javelin, high jump, triple jump and shot put, and women's finals in the triple jump, hammer, pole vault and discus. All remaining track finals for men and women also will be held -- 100, 200, 400, 800, 1,500 and 5,000 meters, 3000 steeplechase, 4x100, 4x400 relays, and 110/100 hurdles and 400 hurdles.
The only events held so far were the decathlon (men) and heptathlon (women), which were held last week at Carleton.

Meet Preview
The St. Thomas men's and women's track and field teams will each try to win their fourth consecutive conference team outdoor championships in the two-day meet Friday and Saturday in Moorhead.
Coach Steve Mathre's men's team will try to continue a streak which has seen UST win 18 of the last 20 outdoor team titles. The Tommie seniors are 7-for-7 in MIAC team titles indoors and outdoors in their careers. Senior Andrew Hilliard (4x400) will try to join an select group to run on four consecutive MIAC champion relay teams. Hilliard also will try to win the 400 hurdles for the third year in a row.
Coach Joe Sweeney's women's teams have won 17 of the last 18 outdoor team championships, and the seniors are 7-for-7 in MIAC team titles indoors and outdoors in their careers. Jill Ylonen and Heidi Vogel (4x100) will try to join a select group to run on four consecutive MIAC champion relay teams. Last week, the Toms' 4x400 relay team of Ylonen, Mollie Hupp, Vogel and Teresa Smock ran 3:51.87 -- just over the NCAA automatic mark of 3:51.00. That ranks fifth in Division III.
