St. Thomas will host track and field athletes from more than 20 schools for Friday night's UST Last Chance Invitational in O'Shaughnessy Stadium. The competition starts with some field events at 4 p.m. and the first track event at 5 p.m. The final events is the men's 10,000 scheduled for 9 p.m.

There is no admission charge.

It's the final opportunity to make or improve qualifying times/marks for the May 22-24 Division III national meet in Canton, N.Y., and primarily elite athletes will compete.

All MIAC teams will be represented, as will the Univserity of Minnesota, Concordia-St. Paul, Iowa Conference schools Buena Vista, Luther, Simpson and Wartburg, and Wisconsin schools Stout, Eau Claire, River Falls and LaCrosse. A few top-flight unattached athletes also will be in the field.

St. Thomas swept the MIAC team championships last weekend in Moorhead -- the school's fourth consecutive men's and women's team sweep.

In current Division III national rankings, the Tommies have several men's and women's athletes in -- or trying to reach -- the national field:
.Joe Thomas is seeded fifth in the high jump (6-10 3/4) with an automatic mark, and is 26th with a provisional mark in the triple jump (46-6).
.The men's 4x100 relay is ranked 13th at 41.65, while the men's 4x400 is seeded fifth at 3:13.80.
.Andrew Hilliard is seeded 17th in the 400 hurdles (53.61);
.Carson Glad is seeded ninth in the 200 (21.55);
.Brian Preus is seeded 43rd in the 5,000 (14:49.67);
.Jason Schwietz is seeded 23rd in the 400 (48.34);
.At least two other Tommie men are close to provisional marks -- Tore Evenson in the javelin (184-0), and Craig Benson in the 110 hurdles (15.05);
.In the women's 800, Teresa Smock is seeded fifth (2:12.39), Tish Dusich is seeded 17th (2:14.69); Mollie Hupp is seeded 22nd (2:15.37).
.Hupp also is seeded 32nd in the 400 (57.38).
.The UST women's 4x400 relay is seeded 11th (3:51.87), and the Tommie 4x100 is seeded 26th (48.88).
.Karolien Bastiaens is seeded third in the pole vault with an automatic height of 12-5 1/4.
