Men's Track breaks MIAC record in 4x100

May 19, 2003
The St. Thomas men's track and field team broke the five-year-old school and conference record in the 4x100 relay in Friday's UST Last Chance meet at O'Shaughnessy Stadium.

The quartet of Tom Hart, Roman Cress, Cassidy Glad and Carson Glad clocked 40.85. The old MIAC record was 40.97 set by St. Thomas in 1998 at nationals. That time also is ranked first in Division III this season. Andrew Hilliard has run on the relay the last three seasons and likely will run with the relay at nationals.

Hilliard also improved his NCAA provisional time in the 400 hurdles as he ran 52.96. That time now ranks 16th in Division III and likely will be good enough to make the NCAA meet.

The Toms won the 4x400 in 3:16.70. The Tommies already have the sixth-best 4x400 time in Division III at 3:13.80 clocked at last month's Drake Relays.

Bryce Beckman (1:53.72) and Cory Fusco (1:54.52) placed 1-2 in the 800. Joe Thomas won the high jump (6-7). Carson Glad won the 200 (21.83).

Other top-three Tommie finishers were Robert Ware, third in the 400 (48.79); Brian Preus (31:21.77) and Sean Brenckman (31:55.34), second and third in the 10,000; Jason Peterson, second in the long jump (21-6); Andrew Kisielius, second in the triple jump (44-9); and Tore Evenson, third in the javelin (167-4).

The men's NCAA qualifiers for this week's Division III Championships in Canton N.Y. are Carson Glad (200), Hilliard (400 hurdles), Thomas (high jump) and the 4x100 and 4x400 relays. The 4x400 consists of Hilliard, Ware, Carson Glad and Jason Schwietz.
