Men's Track has good showings at Iowa meet

The St. Thomas men's indoor track and field team placed a close third of six teams in a strong field at Saturday's Buena Vista Invitational in Storm Lake, Iowa.

The Toms finished behind winner Nebraska Wesleyan and runner-up Wartburg.

The Tommies had 13 top-three finishes led by junior Cory Fusco's victory in the mile (4:27.26).

Freshman Matt Schroeder took this with a 14-5 1/2 height in the pole vault. Mike Draxton and senior Joe Thomas placed third and fifth as both cleared 6-5 1-2 in the high jump. Freshman P.J. Theisen took second in both the long jump (22-1 3-4) and the triple jump (43-4 1/4). Senior Ben Garbe was third in the triple jump (42-11 3-4). Senior Matt McLaughlin was second in the weight throw (52-0 1/2). In the 3,000, Bill Kretsch was second (9:06.33), Tristan Christ was third (9:09.09) and Sean Brenckman was fifth (9:16.29). Brian Hauge was fourth in the 1000 (2:37.43). Travis Birklid was fifth in the 55 hurdles (8.23). Carson Glad was second in the 200 (22.51) and fourth in the 55 (6.62). In the 400, Jason Schwietz was third (50.59) and Cassidy Glad was fifth (50.65). St. Thomas was second in the 4x400 (3:22.75) and third in the distance medley (10:51.18).
