Men's Track sharp at Sat.'s Border Battle

The St. Thomas men's indoor track and field team had three NCAA provisional marks and won seven events as it outscored St. Olaf, UW-Stout and UW-Eau Claire at Saturday's Border Battle meet on the Oles' campus in Northfield.
The Tommies scored 189 followed by St. Olaf (143),
UW-Eau Claire (142) and UW-Stout (136).
Carson Glad won the 400 dash in an NCAA provisional time of 49.30. Matt McLaughlin won the weight throw in a career-best 55-2, which ranks 13th in Division III thus far in 2004. The Toms' 4x400 relay unit of Glad, Chris Mattke, Jason Scwietz and Shaun Sharpe won in a provisional time of 3:20.85.
Other firsts for Coach Steve Mathre's team were Cassidy Glad in the 200 (22.44); Cory Fusco in the 800 (1:57.21); Joe Thomas in the high jump (6-3 1/2); and Dan Evenson in the 55 dash (6.65).
Runners-up were John Schwerkoske in the 3,000 (8:52.69); Travis Birklid in the 55 hurdles (8.22); Jerrod Gray in the high jump (5-11 1-2); and the 4x200 relay (1:33.75).
Thirds were scored by Bill Kretsch in the 3,000 (8:57.20); Jason Simmons in the 55 hurdles (8.30); Tom Hart in the 55 dash (6.75) Peter Rosholt in the weight throw (49-5); Mike Draxton in the long jump (20-4 1-2); Ben Garbe in the triple jump (43-1 3-4); and Brian Hauge in the 1,500 (4:08.98).
Fourths were recorded by P.J. Theisen in the 200 (23.25) and 55 dashes (6.79); Schwietz in the 400 (50.43); Thomas in the triple jump (42-1 3-4); and Joe Hoovestol in the 1,500 (4:11.43).
Fifths were scored by Hart in the 200 (23.35); Mattke in the 55 (6.82); Tristan Christ in the 1,500 (4:12.47); and Nick Schleder in the 600 (1:16.87).
