Glad, Thomas sweep MIAC weekly honors

January 31, 2005
St. Thomas All-Americans Carson Glad and Joe Thomas Monday were named MIAC Men's Indoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week.

Glad (SR-Cold Spring/ Rocori) clocked 48.46 for second place out of 65 entries in the 400 meters Saturday at the Iowa State University Open on a 300-meter track in Ames, Iowa. In the process Glad broke his own school record of 48.64 set last season, qualified provisionally for indoor nationals and just missed the NCAA automatic time for an oversized track of 48.30. For nationals purposes, that time converts to a 200-meter track time of 48.96 which ranks him third nationally in Division III in 2005.

Carson also ran on the Toms' sixth-place 4x400 relay in 3:20.31, a time just off the NCAA provisional best. The nine-time All-American is also a 16-time MIAC champion in relay and individual races.

Thomas (SR-St. Paul / St. Paul Academy) took fourth of 24 entrants at Iowa State in the high jump (6-9) in an NCAA provisional mark which also is the second best leap in UST indoor history. That jump ranks third thus far in Division III in 2005. A past NCAA Division III runner-up, Thomas concludes his eligibility in indoor track over the next seven weeks.

One other Tommie is on the NCAA Division III rankings list -- Bryce Beckman (SR-Winona) ran 1:53.72 at Iowa State for sixth out of 50 entrants. That time converts to 1:54.72 for a standard indoor track and ranks him fifth this year. It's also the second-fastest UST indoor time ever for 800 meters.

The Tommies will compete Saturday in Mankato at the Minnesota State Mankato Open.
