Derek Marks has NCAA provisional throw for Men's Track

Sophomore Derek Marks beat the NCAA provisional qualifying standard in the discus to lead the Tommies' men's track and field efforts at Saturday's Carleton Relays. Marks' throw of 162-4 beat the minimum standard by more than six inches and ranks 11th thus far in Division III.
UST held out some key performers and placed fourth in the 16-team meet, with five firsts and 10 top-three placings. St. John's (146), Minnesota State Mankato (128.5), St. Thomas (108.3), Minnesota-Duluth (101.3) and St. Cloud State (71) rounded out the top five team scorers.
UST won the 4x100 (43.75) and 800 relay (1:28.60) and took second in the sprint medley relay (3:37.85). They ran a backup team in the 4x400 and placed fifth (3:28.29).
Individually, P.J. Theisen won the 400 hurdles (54.44) and took third in the long jump (20-9 3-4); Cory Fusco won the 800 (1:56.94); Dave Diercks was second in the javelin (186-10); Colin Sullivan was third in the 10,000 (32:55.19); Chris Mattke was fourth in the 400 hurdles (56.27), seventh in the long jump (19-10 3-4) and eighth in the 100 hurdles (16.22); J.J. Kirby was sixth in the 200 (22.67) and eighth in the high jump (6-0); Jarrod Grey (6-4) and Mike Draxton (6-2) took fourth and fifth in the high jump; Kaleb Stromberg placed eighth in the 5,000 (15:47.08); Brian Welle (16.41) and Travis Birklid (16.65) took 10th and 12th in the 100 hurdles; Will Hawthorne (4:11.71) and Jeff Goeden (4:12.49) placed 11th and 12th in the 1,500; Brad Hansen (13-5 3-4) and Andy Dauer (12-11 3-4) took 12th and 13th in the pole vault; and Dan Everson (11.28) and Justin Nwadiashi (11.30) placed 10th and 12th in the 100 meters.
