Carson Glad leads busy weekend for Men's Track

St. Thomas senior All-American Carson Glad clocked 21.51 and placed ninth out of 13 runners in a Special 200 Meters race at Saturday's Drake Relays in Des Moines.
Running in a field of Olympic hopefuls and Division I athletes, Glad posted the fourth-best Division III time of 2005. His NCAA provisional qualifying time was just .20 off the NCAA automatic time.
Other St. Thomas entrants at Drake were P.J. Theisen, who clocked 54.17 in the 400 hurdles; Dave Diercks, who threw 185-0 in the javelin; and the 4x800 relay team of Joe Hoovestol, Bryce Beckman, Jeff Goeden and Cory Fusco, which took 10th of 17 in 7:46.19.
St. Thomas had several athletes compete Saturday at Gustavus' Drake Alternative meet. Diercks won the javelin (166-10); Derek Marks won the discus; Peter Rosholt was third in the hammer as he improved his NCAA provisional qualifying mark (176-3); J.J. Kirby (19-10 3-4), Chris Mattke (19-2) and A.C. Udeaja (18-10 1-2) placed 3-4-7 in the long jump; Andy Dauer, Brad Hansen and Matt Schoroeder all tied for sixth in the pole vault (13-9 1-4); Jarrod Grey (22.98) and Lewis Hildebrand (23.04) took 7-8 in the 200 meters; Mike Draxton (40-3 1-4), Michael Madison (39-11 1-4) and Nate Wagner (38-11 1-2) placed 3-4-7 in the triple jump; Chris Mattke (56.17), Travis Birklid (58.51), Scott Busacker (59.20) and Brian Welle (59.76) placed 3-4-7-8 in the 400 hurdles; J.J. Kirby (50.47), Hildebrand (50.69) and Kai Sill (52.78) placed 3-5-9 in the 400 meters; and Birklid (16.12), Mattke (16.45), Welle (16.71) and Robbie Deming placed 5-6-8-9 in the 110 hurdles.
St. Thomas hosts an invitational meet Saturday May 7 at O'Shaughnessy Stadium, the Tommies' last competition before the May 13-14 MIAC Championships at Macalester.
