St. Thomas had several top-nine finishes at Saturday's UST Invite at O'Shaughnessy Stadium. The non-team scored competition featured several Division II teams plus St. Thomas, St. John's and St. Olaf.
For the Tommies, Derek Marks won the discus in 154-0, and P.J. Theisen won the 400 hurdles in an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 53.93. Teammate Chris Mattke was fourth in the 400 hurdles in 55.47 and ninth in the 100 hurdles (16.24).
In the 800 meters, Bryce Beckman (1:55.16) and Cory Fusco (1:55.46) placed 3-4. Beckman also had a career-best 21-8 leap in the long jump for sixth place. Collin Sullivan was second in the 5,000 (15:33.15). Travis Birklid ran 15.64 in the 110 hurdles. Peter Rosholt was fifth in the hammer in 167-6, and Dave Diercks was fifth in the javelin in 181-9. Cassidy Glad was fourth in the 200 meters in 22.81 and also clocked 11.00 in the prelims of the 100 meters. Jason Schwietz was fifth in the 400 in 49.97 and ninth in the 200 in 23.05; J.J. Kirby was seventh in the 400 (50.66) and ninth in the long jump (20-9 1-2); Jeff Goeden was 10th in the 1,500 (4:07); Lewis Hildebrand was ninth in the 400 (51.66). In the high jump, Mike Draxton, Jerrod Gray and J.J. Kirby all cleared 6-2 1-4 and tied for sixth. In the pole vault, Andy Dauer and Brad Hansen took 7-8 as both cleared 13-9 1-4. Michael Madison was seventhin the triple jump (40-7 1-2).
St. Thomas will compete in the MIAC Championships next Friday and Saturday at Macalaester.
