Theisen

Junior P.J. Theisen scored 46 individual points plus anchored UST's winning 4x400 relay at the MIAC Indoor Track & Field Championships to lead St. Thomas to its 22nd team title in the 22-year history of the event. The two-day meet concluded Saturday at Carleton.

UST scored 215 points and topped runner-up Hamline by 112 points -- the sixth largest winning margin in event history. The men's victory was part of a St. Thomas men's women's team sweep for the seventh year in a row.

The 22 consecutive team titles is the longest team championship streak in MIAC history. The Toms' average winning margin in the 22-year streak is an amazing 87 points. They've won by 30 or more points and scored at least 179 points in 20 of the 22 indoor championships. UST has also won 20 of the last 23 MIAC outdoor team championships.

Theisen's five firsts and 56 points are believed to be MIAC single-meet records. The New Prague High graduate -- a CoSIDA Academic All-American -- now has 19 career top-5 MIAC meet finishes (10 relay or individuals firsts) and has been a part of 178 points in five career MIAC meets. He likely will make the NCAA indoor meet next weekend hosted by St. Olaf in the long jump (ranked 10th) and 55 hurdles (ranked sixth).

Theisen won the long jump (career-best 23-4-1 1-2, NCAA provisional), triple jump (career-best 46-2 1-2, NCAA provisional mark), 400 meters (49.86) and 55 hurdles (career-best 7.63, NCAA provisional) and placed third in the 200 meters (22.73) in a 1-2-3-4 Tommie sweep. He anchored the 4x400 team to victory with freshmen James Ewer and Pat Jager and senior J.J. Kirby in 3:21.54.

Coach Steve Mathre's team had 10 firsts and five seconds and scored in 15 events. UST received points from 23 different athletes including 11 freshmen. Ewer scored 26 individual points and ran on the 4x400 to lead the freshmen.

The Tommie sprinters/jumpers scored 114 points to outscore runner-up Hamline alone in just six events -- the long jump, triple jump, 55, 200, 400 meters and 4x400.

Other victories were scored in the weight throw by senior Peter Rosholt with a career-best 58-0 1-2 that ranks 13th nationally; freshman Matt Boumeester in the 1,000 (2:33.85); senior Cassidy Glad in the 200 (22.68); Ewer in the 55 (6.46, NCAA provisional); and the distance medley relay in 10:29.84 with Joe Hoovestol, Glad, and freshmen Evan Schwartz and Kyle Brandon.

Seconds were scored by Boumeester in the mile (4:21.10); Ewer in the long jump (22-4 1-2) and 200; Matt Schroeder in the pole vault (14-10 1-4); and Glad in the 55 meters (6.59). Thirds were scored by Mike Draxton in the high jump (6-4 1-4); Brandon in the 1000 (2:35.69); Theisen in the 200; Travis Birklid in the 55 hurdles (8.04); and Jager in the 400 (50.06).

Fourths were scored by Hoovestol in the 1000 (2:36.57) and three freshmen -- Kyle Jepson in the 55 meters (6.63), Jonah Sherman in the high jump (6-2 1-4) and Joe DeFrance in the 200 (22.86). Fifths were scored by freshman Brian Pink in the high jump (6-2 1-4); Andy Dauer in the pole vault (14-0 1-2); DeFrance in the 55 (6.64); and Kirby in the 400 (50.91).

Freshman Logan O'Grady placed sixth in the mile (4:25.64). Kregg Hochhalter took seventh in the 600 (1:16.92) and Lem Berry placed seventh in the heptathlon. Mark O'Connell took eighth in the weight throw (48-0). Freshman Ryan Blake took eighth in the pole vault (13-0 3-4).
