Tommie Sports -

Program Outlook

St. Thomas is the conference's dominant team in track and field.

St. Thomas has won the MIAC indoor team championship all 24 seasons it has been held. The Toms have captured the outdoor team title 22 of the last 26 seasons. St. Thomas individuals or relay units own MIAC all-time records in 13 of the 22 events outdoors.

The team has regularly enjoyed success at the national level. In the 23 seasons that NCAA Division III has held indoor championship meets, the Tommies have claimed seven top-five team finishes, including the 1985 national team championship. They also have won All-American honors indoors 62 times, with nine individual champs and 10 NCAA runners-up.

Coach Steve Mathre was named NCAA Region Coach of the Year in 2008 after he guided the Toms to a fifth-place NCAA outdoor finish and a sweep of the conference indoor and outdoor team titles. UST had two indoor All-Americans and won outdoor All-America honors four times, led by Mark O'Connell's national title in the hammer and Derek Marks' NCAA runner-up placing in the discus.

Either the Tommie men or women have had a relay reach the national finals 27 consecutive seasons.

In 28 years of NCAA Division III outdoor championships, St. Thomas teams are perennial top-20 placewinners and posted 11 consecutive top-10 finishes from 1983-93. St. Thomas has averaged five All-Americans in each of the last nine seasons. The Tommies have earned outdoor track All-American honors 139 times, with 15 NCAA champions and 14 runners-up. The Tommies have placed in the top five in the 4x400 relay in six of the last nine seasons. UST has had either a men's or women's relay team in the national finals 26 years in a row.

Andrew Hilliard was voted a CoSIDA Academic All-American in 2001, 2002 and 2003, and P.J. Theisen won the same elite honor in 2006 and 2008. Both won NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships.

The Tommies' eight-lane, all-weather outdoor track was resurfaced in summer 2004, and they’ll again host several meets there. The Tommies also have a resurfaced indoor track in Coughlan Field House. The Tommies travel south for an annual spring trip, and regularly face the best teams in Minnesota, Wisconsin and Iowa.

Approximately 60 athletes are on the roster, with everyone eligible to compete in the majority of meets.
