Toms close 9-2 in Florida

Chris Bullis' three-run homer snapped a 2-2 fifth-inning tie as No. 18-ranked St. Thomas finished 9-2 on its Florida spring-break trip with Saturday's 8-2 baseball victory over Amherst (Mass.).
Will Montgomery came on in the first inning when freshman starter Matt Schuld injured his leg. Montgomery went the distance for the nine-inning victory. UST had no errors and outhit the Lord Jeffs 9-4. Amherst (4-5) had two losses to the Tommies on the trip.
Bullis finished 17-of-34 with 14 RBI, nine runs and six walks in 10 Florida games.
The Tommies (11-5) have won 10 of their last 12 games. Their 11-4 Division III record includes a 2-4 record vs. Wisconsin teams and a 9-0 mark vs. others. They beat No. 1-ranked Otterbein (9-4) and No. 26-Salisbury (now 19-3) in Florida. Earlier this month they beat St. Scholastica (now 12-3) and split with UW-Stout (6-3 vs. Division III foes
In 15 games vs. Division III foes, St. Thomas has allowed just 53 runs and has a 2.08 ERA. The Toms batted .380 in their first 10 games in Florida.
UST is 109-27 in Florida games in Coach Dennis Denning's 13 seasons.
St. Thomas opens MIAC play March 31 at home with a doubleheader vs. Gustavus.
