Matthew Enck's RBI single with two outs in the home half of the ninth inning lifted St. Thomas to a 2-1 win over Northwestern-St. Paul in Monday's non-conference baseball game at Koch Diamond.
The Tommies (4-3) celebrated their first on-campus baseball game in 99 weeks, dating back to May 6, 2019.
Sam Kulesa slapped an infield single and took second on a throwing error to put the go-ahead run into scoring position. Enck stroked a single to right that let Kulesa slide in at home well ahead of the throw.
Kulesa, who had a 3-for-4 day at the plate, earlier drove in the Toms' first run with a one-out seventh-inning single. Jake Porter also had two hits.
Five Tommie pitchers, all righthanders, combined on a five-hitter with 15 strikeouts. But the Purple pitchers -- including four making their season debut -- had to work out of several jams. The Eagles (7-7) left 10 on base as they capitalized on six walks and a hit batter..
St. Thomas redshirt sophomore Chris Chiraboga, making his first college varsity pitching appearance, started and fanned 10 in four shutout innings, with just one hit allowed.
Redshirt sophomore Jake Lindsay came on for his collegiate debut in the bottom of the sixth inning with two outs and the bases loaded and got a ground out to end that threat. Freshman Colby Gartner worked a scoreless eighth inning, but he needed an inning-ending strikeout to strand runners at the corners.
In seven games Tommie pitchers have recorded 80 strikeouts and 23 walks in 56 innings and a 1.46 ERA.
St. Thomas opens MIAC play Friday at home against St. Mary's in a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
