Baseball can't close out first-place Bison, falls 8-7

4/10/2022 4:05:00 PM | Baseball

St. Paul, Minn. - Kyle Halverson had another huge batting day, but Tommie Baseball was unable to hold down first-place North Dakota State in Sunday's series finale at Koch Diamond. The Bison rallied from an early 6-2 deficit and recorded an 8-7 win to take the Summit League weekend series, 2-1.

The Tommies (5-19 overall, 2-7 Summit) had their best weekend of the season -- including another two home-run game by Halverson. Despite outscoring (14-12) and outhitting (26-17) the Bison overall over the three contests and striking out 31 Bison batters, the Purple could only manage a 1-2 record on the weekend.

The Toms dropped to 1-8 in one-run games, and 13 of their 19 season defeats have come by one or two runs. That doesn't include the 4-1 loss to NDSU in game two on Saturday.

On Sunday, NDSU (18-10, 7-2) used four home runs -- including back-to-back two-out HRs in the fourth inning -- to erase the lead and gain control. The Bison are on school-record pace with 37 homers in 29 games.

Bison reliever Tristan Roerich pitched six innings and allowed two runs on six hits and no walks with eight strikeouts to take the mound victory. He got a game-ending strikeout on a 3-2 pitch with the tying and go-ahead runners aboard to close out the Tommies.

Halverson had a two HR day in Saturday's 6-0 win over the Bison. On Sunday, he slapped a solo homer in the third inning and a solo shot in the seventh. He also had a sliding web-gem catch in foul territory to end one late NDSU threat.

In the ninth inning, after two-out singles by Sam Kulesa and Charlie Bartholomew, Halverson was up again and looking to add to his six-RBI weekend. He battled to a 3-2 count and fouled off two pitches before going down on strikes.

Tommie Notes

The Toms made just one error in 96 defensive chances on the NDSU series and improved to .977 on the season -- a clip that ranks in the top 40 among Division I programs and second in the Summit League. The 2021 Purple had a .975 defensive clip over 47 games to rank in the top seven in D-III.

A fifth-year senior, Halverson's Division III era consisted of 100 games over four seasons, with four homers, all hit last season. At the halfway point of 2022 he has recorded six HRs in 24 games in Division I, including his four this weekend.

Freshman Brigs Richartz stroked his first collegiate home run, a two-run shot in the first inning over the right-field fence. He's hit safely in 11 of his last 12 games.

Kulesa had a three-hit game -- his second in D-I -- to help lead an 11-hit Tommie attack. He also made a slick diving stop and putout at second base late in Sunday's contest.

Freshman reliever Carl Cano struck out four, walked two and hit a batter in two scoreless innings of relief to keep the Purple in the game. Cano lowered his ERA to 1.29 in six appearances.

The Toms are scheduled to play a non-conference game Wednesday evening in Minneapolis against the Minnesota Gophers. They will travel for three games next Friday and Saturday to the Dallas, Texas area to face Tarleton State in more non-conference play.
