Minneapolis, Minn. - Sophomore Kolby Gartner recorded his first collegiate shutout --and the Tommie staff's first complete game in Division I -- with a three-hitter to lead St. Thomas Baseball to a 6-0 victory over Minnesota in non-conference play Tuesday night at Siebert Field.
The Purple (8-21) outhit the Gophers 12-3 as they built their first three-game win streak in D-I. They avenged two previous 2022 defeats to Minnesota -- a 12-0 decision on March 1, and a 2-1 loss seven days earlier on the same field.
St. Thomas had lost 20 of its last 22 games against Minnesota dating back to the late 1980s. The programs didn't play between 2013 and 2021, thus St. Thomas' last wins over the U of M both came at the old Siebert Field: a 6-3 victory in April 2009, and an 8-3 win in April 2011.
Fifth-year senior Kyle Halverson continued his sizzling stretch in April with a two-run homer and an RBI single. It was his fourth consecutive multi-hit game. In his last eight games, Halverson has six homers amomg 14 hits, plus 12 RBI and 10 runs.
Gartner was staked to a 6-0 lead as the Toms erupted for nine hits and six runs in the second, third and fourth innings. Gartner allowed a leadoff single in the first inning but set down 18 of the next 21 Gophers. He struck out nine and scattered three hits and three walks as he posted his first win of the D-I era.
The Toms played error-free defense for their sixth consecutive game and lifted their season fielding clip to .981.
Fast Start
The Toms broke to a 2-0 lead in the second inning. Charlie Bartholomew slapped an infield single, Brigs Richartz walked, Avery Lehman singled to load the bases, and Matthew Enck stroked a two-run single.
The Purple added two more runs in the third inning. Ben Vujovich singled and Halverson followed with a two-run homer.
The Toms added two runs in the fourth inning. Enck singled, Sam Kulesa had an infield single, Halverson followed with an RBI single, Bartholomew was hit by a pitch to load the bases, and Max Moris hit an RBI single.
Tommie Notes
Freshman Brigs Richartz extended his hitting streak to nine games (and 16 of his last 17).
All nine Tommies reached base via a hit or walk.
St. Thomas is set to play three homes games Friday through Sunday April 22-24 at Koch Diamond against Summit League opponent Northern Colorado. Friday's first pitch is set for 3 p.m.
