Laubscher's gem leads Baseball to split with first-place Bison

St. Paul, Minn. - For the first time in 37 seasons, St. Thomas faced off in baseball against North Dakota State, in a Saturday conference doubleheader moved to the Tommies' Koch Diamond.
The moment and the opportunity were not too big for Tommie veterans Graham Laubscher and Kyle Halverson.
Laubscher, a St. Thomas grad student and staff ace, spun a two-hitter for a combined shutout with a career-best 15 strikeouts in a 6-0 victory.
Halverson, another fifth-year player making the D-I transition in 2022, smacked a pair of two-run homers -- in the top of the first and ninth innings -- as part of a 3-for-4 day to lead an 11-hit Tommie attack.
Redshirt junior T.J. Constertina got the final two outs to strand two Bison runners and close out NDSU its first shutout loss in a nine-inning game this season.
In game two, the league-leading Bison broke open a 1-1 game in the late going and recorded a 4-1 win.
St. Thomas outhit North Dakota State 15-8 on the afternoon with a split that reversed two trends -- the Toms had lost six of their previous seven games, while the Bison had won eight of their previous nine.
The Tommies (5-18 overall, 2-6 Summit) and Bison (18-10, 6-2) play a single game here Sunday (1 p.m.) to close the weekend series.
Rare Bison Shutout
The game-one decision marked the first D-I pitching win for Laubscher, who allowed just two base runners in the first seven innings. The former Division III All-America hurler set down the first 17 NSDU batters he faced Saturday. Calen Schwabe's flare into short right field fell for a two-out single between a diving right fielder Ben Vujovich and two other Tommies in the sixth inning to break up the perfect game.
Trailing 3-0, NSDU had one baserunner in the seventh via walk, but was unable to score. Trailing 4-0 in the eighth inning, the Bison threatened with a walk and hit batter with one out, but Laubscher got a pop out and fly out to end the inning.
Halverson's two-run homer in the top of the ninth inning provided some cushion. Laubscher's bid for a complete-game shutout came up just short as he gave up a walk and single in the Bison's last at-bat and left the game with one out. But Constertina got a pair of ground outs to end the game and keep NDSU off the scoreboard.
Laubscher benefited from a few excellent defensive plays. Avery Lehman had a diving catch in center in the third inning, and Kulesa also had a slick assist on a ground out in the fourth inning.
Laubscher, who last weekend broke a 56-year-old Tommie career record for strikeouts, has 290 strikeouts in 228 career innings. This season he ranks among the NCAA D-I leaders in Ks per nine innings (12.8) with 60 strikeouts in 42.1 innings.
At the plate, Lehman had a sac fly in the sixth inning for a 3-0 Tommie lead. Freshman Joe Vos had an RBI single to score Halverson in the eighth inning. Matthew Enck went 2-for-4 and Vujovich went 2-for-3 with a walk. Halverson had a three-hit game with three runs scored plus a walk. He also recorded his second two-home run game of the season.
Nightcap
The Tommies rallied to tie game two 1-1 in the top of the sixth on Brigs Richartz' RBI double to the fence in right-center. The freshman has his safely in 10 of his last 11 games.
But a two-run sixth inning by the Bison put them ahead to stay.
Trailing 3-1 in the seventh inning, Max Moris singled and Vujovich doubled. Moris tried to score all the way from first base but was tagged out at home plate on two strong throws from center field and second base.
NDSU added one run in the eighth and secured the victory with a scoreless ninth.
For the Purple, freshman Evan Esch had another solid mound performance, this time out of the bullpen. He worked 5.1 innings in relief from the third inning into the eighth. He allowed three runs, five hits, two walks and two hit batters with five strikeouts.
