Baseball falls 11-4 to Jacks on road in series opener

5/14/2022 7:40:00 PM | Baseball

Brookings, S.D. - Host South Dakota State secured the final conference baseball playoff spot Saturday as it scored 11 runs from the fifth though eighth innings to pull away to an 11-4 win over St. Thomas in Summit League play on the Jacks' diamond.

Sam Kulesa and freshman Ben Vujovich homered for the Tommies (13-27 overall, 7-12 Summit), who were outhit 12-7.

SDSU (19-19, 10-7), trailed 1-0 with two out in the last of the fifth inning. With baserunners at the corners, Dawson Parry tagged the first pitch from Graham Laubscher over the fence in left field for a 3-1 lead, and the host team never trailed again.

Laubscher allowed two more runs in the sixth inning before leaving, down 5-1. The fifth-year lefty, in his 49th career pitching appearance, allowed seven hits and four walks and struck out six as he took his first mound loss in six weeks. He was 3-0 in his previous five starts since losing to the Jacks 5-3 at home April 2.

The Jacks added three runs in both the seventh and eighth innings off freshmen relievers Tucker Huhn and Joe Vos, an outfielder making his collegiate pitching debut.

Down 8-1, the Purple scored three runs in the top of the eighth. Kulesa's two-run home run and a bases-loaded sac fly by Jonah Hoeg made it 8-4, but two runners were later stranded in scoring position.

St. Thomas' Max Moris and Vujovich each had two hits. In his last 13 games, Vujovich is batting .370 with 17 hits and 16 RBI.

The teams play a noon doubleheader on Sunday to close the series.
