Baseball does it again: Comeback win locks up 5th place

St. Paul, Minn. - Freshman Brigs Richartz continued his hitting surge and St. Thomas Baseball wrapped up sole possession of fifth place in the Summit League with Friday's 5-2 comeback victory over playoff-bound Omaha at Koch Diamond.
The Tommies (15-29 overall, 9-14 Summit) have won six of their last eight games at home. After starting its inaugural D-I season 5-21 overall, Coach Chris Olean's team is 10-8 over its last 18 games.
The Toms have won four of their last six weekend series: two of three against Tarleton State, Northern Colorado and Western Illinois; and are up 2-0 on Omaha with Saturday's series finale set to go.
Omaha (24-28, 12-11) had 11 hits but left nine on base. The Mavs have secured one of four conference playoff berths for next week's double-elimination Summit tournament in Tulsa, Okla. They won two out of three over the Tommies in late March.
Three Tommie pitchers combined to strike out eight and issue just one bases-on-balls -- a staff season low for walks in a game.
Comeback Kids
Richartz went 4-for-4 in Thursday's 6-4 comeback win over Omaha, including a game-tying three-run homer. On Friday, his eighth-inning single drove in the go-ahead run to snap a 2-2 tie. He previously scored the tying run in the sixth inning on Max Moris' RBI single. He lifted his conference batting average to .294 over 23 games.
Redshirt junior Charlie Bartholomew continued the eighth-inning surge as he slashed his second career home run -- and first round tripper of the season -- over the fence in right field to push the Tommie lead to three runs.
Senior T.J. Constertina earned his 10th career save and third of the season as he set down the Mavs 1-2-3 in the top of the ninth inning in what was likely his final game on Koch Diamond.
Freshman Evan Esch started and allowed two earned runs and five hits and struck out four over four innings. Redshirt soph Duke Coborn (3-3) earned the win as he pitched four shutout innings. Coborn scattered six hits and walked one and was aided by one pickoff, one caught stealing, and an inning-ending double play in the seventh inning.
Avery Lehman closed his on-campus career with two hits, including an RBI single in the fifth inning. Moris also had two hits in the Toms 13-hit attack. Freshman Ben Vujovich scored the go-ahead run in the eight inning with a walk, a sac bunt by Kyle Halverson and Richartz' single.
St. Thomas closes its season Saturday with the series finale against Omaha set for 5 p.m. in Miesville, Minn., located 35 southeast of campus in Dakota County, just past Hastings. The game will be played at the Miesville Mudhens' Park, and tickets are $8.
Tommie Notes
