But Coach Chris Olean's Tommies stayed the course and kept battling. As they gained more experience, confidence followed.
Saturday, the Purple closed out their inaugural season and left with a three-game win streak, thanks to three comeback victories in three days against playoff-bound Omaha. The season finale saw the Toms fall behind 7-1 before a mid-game rally helped produce a 9-8 victory over the Mavs.
All nine Tommie starters hit safely on the game, played before 400 fans on a chill May evening at the home of the Miesville Mudhens town ball team. St. Thomas had 42 hits in the three games vs. the Mavs and hit .404 on the weekend.
Saturday's one-run win let St. Thomas claim its first weekend sweep of the season in 10 opportunities. The Toms finished 11-8 over the final 19 games, and went 6-1 down the home stretch in games decided by one or two runs. Four of their five mid- or late-game comeback wins came against Omaha (24-29, 12-12).
Olean's team (16-29 overall, 10-14 Summit) secured fifth place in the conference with Thursday's 6-4 win, after trailing 4-0. Then came Friday's 5-2 win after being down 2-0. On Saturday, what proved to be the winning run came home on a passed ball in the seventh inning for a 9-7 cushion.
Three Tommie relievers allowed one run over four innings. Fifth-year grad student Graham Laubscher took the mound victory in what was his 50th and final college pitching appearance, and 39th start. Despite not having his best stuff, Laubscher fanned five on Saturday and finished his only D-I season with a Summit League-best 98 strikeouts in 79 innings.
Two other guys playing their final games in a Tommie uniform -- fifth-year 3B Kyle Halverson and senior closer T.J. Constertina -- had memorable final games. Halverson went 4-for-5 and drove in two runs. Constertina posted his second save in as many days and the 10th and 11th on his career. He retired all six batters he faced to close out the last two victories.
Freshman Brigs Richartz drove in two runs with a double to key the seven-run inning. Richartz finished the three-game series 9-for-13 with six RBI and four runs.
Matthew Enck, Max Moris and Charlie Bartholomew all had RBI hits.
