Tulsa, Okla. - Host Oral Roberts scored twice in the ninth inning to tie the game, and used a one-out RBI double off the wall in the 10th inning to record a 7-6 victory over St. Thomas here Friday night in the opener of a three-game Summit League baseball series.
The Golden Eagles (29-14 overall, 12-4 Summit) moved into a tie for the conference lead with idle North Dakota State and moved to 3-0 this season in extra-inning contests.
Jake McMurray homered to start the ninth-inning comeback -- his first round tripper of the season. One inning later he stroked the walk-off double to score a runner from first for the home team. After a slow start, ORU collected 11 of its 15 hits and five of its seven runs over the last four innings.
The Tommies (12-25, 6-10) were unable to capitalize on a 15-strikeout stat line by their pitchers and a fourth-inning grand slam by Ben Vujovich. The freshman's fourth-inning blast was his fourth homer of the season and the program's first Division I grand slam.
The Purple got solid pitching performances from Devon Schewe (three innings) and Duke Coborn (four innings). They combined to allow two earned runs and seven hits over seven innings. Coborn recorded a season-high eight strikeouts with no walks.
ORU scored single runs in the bottom of the seventh and eighth innings to pull within 6-4, then used a solo homer, a single, a balk and an RBI single to tie the game in the ninth. A leadoff single in the 10th was followed by a one-out RBI double to end the contest.
St. Thomas dropped to 0-5 this season in extra-inning games, all on the road. The Purple have 16 losses by one or two runs so far in year one of D-I play. It was just the second time in 10 games that the Toms scored six or more runs and lost.
Avery Lehman had two hits and an RBI, and Max Moris also had two hits. Sam Kulesa ran his hitting streak to seven games.
The teams play here Saturday (2 p.m.) and again Sunday (1 p.m.).
