Softball splits day two against Samford and Ole Miss

3/18/2023 10:43:00 PM | Softball

Oxford, Miss. – The St. Thomas Softball team got back into the win column to start day two of the Ole Miss Invitational with a 5-3 win over Samford but ran into stiff competition in Ole Miss who took them down 13-1 in five innings.

Game one recap
The Tommies struck early and often in their rematch with the Samford Bulldogs grabbing one run in the first and three in the second.

Their first inning got started with an Avery Wukawitz single through the middle of the infield. She was moved to second on a successful sacrifice bunt by Kaitlyn Raymond and was brought around to score on a well-struck RBI-double to center field off the bat of Brooke Ellestad

Coryn Jacobson's lead-off triple started the second with a bang for the Toms. One batter later she was crossing home plate to double the Purple's lead on a Kameron Monson single through the left side of the infield. After a Sydney Mickett walk and a pitch that hit Avery Wukawitz, Kaitlyn Raymond stepped up to the plate with runners on first and second and two away in the inning.

The sophomore outfielder delivered a two-RBI double to right-center field that scored both Mickett from second and Wukawitz from first to give the Tommies a 4-0 lead.

Isabelle True pitched well with the lead, allowing just one run through six innings of play. Ultimately, the senior arm went the distance while allowing three runners to score.

St. Thomas would be delivered a well-needed insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning when freshman Abbi Stierlen delivered some hurt to the ball, sending it over the left field fence for the first home run of her career.

The Tommies' defense staved off a late Samford run in which the Bulldogs had the tying run on second base with two outs in the top of the final inning.

Four Tommies got on base twice: Kaitlyn Raymond (two RBI and a double), Brooke Ellestad (one RBI and a double), Abbi Stierlen (one RBI and a home run), and Sydney Mickett (a single and a walk). Maddie Grad and Coryn Jacobson each notched an extra base hit, Grad with a double and Jacobson with the first triple of her DI career.

Game Two Recap
St. Thomas  struck quickly once more in game two against an Ole Miss team coming off back-to-back run-rule wins over fellow power-five opponent Purdue.

The Tommies leadoff maestro, Avery Wukawitz got to second on a single to the outfield due to her heads-up baserunning and an error by the defense while getting the ball back to the infield.

Wukawitz advanced to third on a dropped third strike play and then scored while Kaitlyn Raymond attempted to steal second base. The freshman's run is all St. Thomas would muster the rest of the way.

Ole Miss continued their impressive offensive streak by putting up five runs in the first and seven runs in the second. The Rebels added one more run for good measure in the bottom of the fourth and took down the Tommies 13-1 in five innings.

Katie Goelz had the only extra base hit of the game for the Purple, a double in the fourth inning, and both Avery Wukawitz and Sydney Mickett singled. Abbi Stierlen was the only other Tommie to reach when she walked on five pitched in the third.

Grace Bennett was productive out of the bullpen for St. Thomas. The senior went 2.1 innings and allowed one run on four hits and a walk while striking out two batters.
