Omaha, Neb. – St. Thomas Softball opened Summit League play with two losses by scores of 8-1 and 9-0 against the first place Omaha Mavericks.
Game One Recap
The Tommies were led offensively by Kaitlyn Raymond and Avery Wukawitz. Each player reached base safely twice; Raymond walked in two of her four at bats and stole a base, and Wukawitz doubled in the seventh and walked in the fifth inning as part of St. Thomas' lone scoring rally.
That fifth inning rally produced the Tommies' lone run of the game and began with a leadoff single by freshman Keira Murphy. Kenzie Miller came in to pinch run for Murphy and was left at first base over the course of the next two at bats.
Avery Wukawitz stepped up to the plate with two outs in the inning and coaxed a walk out of Omaha pitcher Kamryn Meyer who struck out a season-high 15 in the game. Kaitlyn Raymond then reached on a throwing error by Meyer and Kenzie Miller scored.
The run cut the Mavericks' lead to 5-1, but they would cash in on three insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth to snuff out the Tommies' hopes of a comeback.
The Tommies other hits came off the bat of Brooke Ellestad and Coryn Jacobson. Jacobson's sixth inning double was the third of her season. Sydney Mickett was the Tommies only other baserunner when she walked in the third. It was the 11th time she reached on balls this season, a team-leading mark.
Game Two Recap
St. Thomas held the Omaha offense to just three runs in the first four innings, but the Mavericks erupted for six runs in the fifth on three home runs including a three-run walk-off to win the game 9-0 in five innings.
