Tough pitching sinks Softball in road defeats to Coyotes

Vermillion, S.D. -- Tommie Softball was limited to two runs and four hits over 14 innings on the day in Saturday's 7-2 and 3-0 road losses at South Dakota.
The Purple (16-33 overall, 4-12 Summit) held a 1-0 lead in game one through three innings. But the Coyotes erupted for five runs in the fourth inning, and never trailed again.
Avery Wukawitz singled and scored in the first inning. Katie Goelz scored on Kameron Monson's RBI double in the seventh inning. Goelz singled in the fifth inning.
In game two, South Dakota (21-23, 10-6) received a one-hit shutout from Kori Wedeking, who had no walks and four Ks and retired 21 of the 22 batters she faced. After Abbi Stierlen's leadoff single in the third inning, Wedeking set down the final 15 Tommie batters.
St. Thomas' Isabelle True had a complete game in the second contest as she allowed four hits, one walk and three runs over her six innings.

The teams close out the Summit League series Sunday on the USD field with one game with an 11 a.m. start.
That is scheduled to be the Purple's final road game of 2023 as Kansas City comes to campus for three Tommie home games next weekend to close out the season.
