St. Thomas' Steve Fritz has been named the 2009-2010 Under Armour Division III West Region Athletics Director of the Year. The award is sponsored by the National Association of Collegiate Athletics Directors (NACDA).

Just four regional winners from among 400-plus Division III institutions receive this annual award. Fritz will receive the award Thursday at the NACDA annual workshop in Anaheim, Calif.

Fritz is completing his 19th year as St. Thomas' athletics director and finishing his 30th season as the Tommies' men's basketball head coach.

St. Thomas has achieved a multitude of team successes and department accomplishments since Fritz took over as director of athletics in 1992.

That includes an extraordinary run of success over the last 24 months:

--This August, St. Thomas will open a $54 million athletics and recreation building, aided by two years of research, planning and fundraising by Fritz and other UST leaders.

--The 2009 UST baseball team won the NCAA Division III baseball championship;

--The 2009 UST men's track and field team placed third nationally with two NCAA champion relays;

--The 2009 UST football team recorded a program-high 11 wins and made its first NCAA playoff trip since 1990;

--The UST men’s and women’s programs swept the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) all-sport championships for the second and third consecutive seasons, winning seven MIAC team titles in 2008-09 and nine more in 2009-10;

--Under Fritz’s guidance as head coach, the UST men’s basketball team has ran its conference title streak to five and posted records of 30-1 and 23-4 over the last two seasons.

--In the Division III Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup standings, the 2008-09 Tommies posted a 13th-place finish; the 2009-10 Toms are expected to finish in the top 15 when the results are announced this week;

--In the last 12 years, St. Thomas has received CoSIDA Academic All-America honors 51 times in 13 different sports.

Fritz' resume also included a stint on the Division III Women’s Golf Committee, and the MIAC Athletics Directors’ Committee.
