Junior righthander Ryan Zimmerman allowed one earned run in a complete-game win Saturday as St. Thomas scored a 7-2 win over No. 2-ranked UW-Whitewater in an elimination game at the NCAA baseball regional in Whitewater, Wis.
UST ended a six-game losing streak against the Warhawks dating back to the 2014 national tournament.
All nine Tommie starters had a hit or a run scored in a balanced offensive effort. Jake Smith went 2-for-4 and ran his hitting streak to 13 games.
The hard-luck Zimmerman (5-4), who lowered his ERA to 2.75, won his first game since April 13 and had his second nine-inning complete game of the postseason. He avenged a March 9 loss to Whitewater in the Toms' fourth game of the season. UST has allowed just four runs in 29 innings of their three postseason wins.
The game was scoreless into the fifth inning. UST scored three runs in the bottom of the frame, all after two outs. Two errors and a wild pitch gave it a 3-0 lead. The Toms added two in the sixth for a 5-1 lead on Josh Thorp's RBI double and Sam Schneider's bunt single. Zach Gottfredsen and Sam Cobbs added RBI doubles in the seventh inning.
The Toms play a 2:30 p.m. Sunday elimination game against Saturday's Adrian-St. Scholastica winner. They need to win two games Sunday and two more Monday to win the regional.
