St. Thomas Women's Soccer held off Wartburg 1-0 in Saturday's NCAA playoff game in La Crosse, Wis. Brielle Bierman scored in the 15th minute for the Tommies (13-2-2).
UST had an 8-2 edge in shots on goal and a 10-4 advantage in corner kicks. Olivia Elvidge had two saves in goal for UST, which pushed its unbeaten streak to seven games (5-0-2).
The Tommies will face host UW-La Crosse on Sunday at 1 p.m. The Eagles topped St. Scholastica 2-0.
"The girls came out hard and fought a strong, talented Wartburg team," said Tommie coach Sheila McGill. "Our girls came to play and I am so proud of them all. We created many chances in the first half and off of a long throw by Shelby Stalberger, Brielle Bierman took the shot and put the the ball in the back of the net. Mallory DeBoom created many chances and was dangerous in front of their goal.
"With only 10 seconds left, Olivia Elvidge came out hard and came up huge with a game-winning save -- it was a 50/50 ball and Wartburg's forward was coming in with a hard slide tackle to our diving goalie. Liv made the save and held onto the ball for the shutout."
