ST. PAUL, Minn. – For the second time in a week, the St. Thomas volleyball team hosted Concordia and defeated the Cobbers in three sets on Tuesday night at Schoenecker Arena in the MIAC Quarterfinals.
The Tommies swept the match by the scores of 25-22, 25-13, and 25-14 to advance to Thursday's Semifinals, where they will travel to St. Peter to take on Gustavus. With the win, St. Thomas improves to 22-7 on the year, while the Cobbers drop to 9-18 overall.
St. Thomas sprinted out of the gates, taking a 18-8 lead midway through the first set before the Cobbers went on a 6-2 run, including a streak of four straight points, to bring the score to 20-14. Concordia continued to put pressure on the Tommies, but could not complete the comeback, as the two teams traded points down the stretch and the Tommie women came away with a 25-22 win in set one.
Concordia carried momentum into the second set and held a 4-3 lead early before the Tommies took off on a tear to score 11 straight points and open up a 14-4 lead. From there, St. Thomas would not look back, as the lead would build to as many as 13 points (21-8) on the way to a 25-13 win to take a 2-0 match lead to the third set.
The Cobbers hung tough in the early going of set two, but the Tommie women rattled off eight straight points to crack open a 23-11 lead and seal the win with a final score of 25-14.
For the game, St. Thomas finished with 41 kills and just six errors in 92 attacks for a hitting percentage of .380, while the Cobbers recorded 37 kills with 24 errors in 118 attacks and a percentage of .110.
Junior Brooke Reichart and sophomore Audrey Erickson led the way for the Tommies offensively with 10 kills apiece. Reichart surrendered no errors in 22 attacks for an attack percentage of .455. Erickson registered a double-double with her 10 kills and 13 digs. She also registered a .429 hitting percentage on 21 attacks. Freshman libero Ellie Meyer recorded 17 digs to lead the Purple defensively, while sophomore setter Katherine Mallak moved the ball around with 30 assists.
Brianna Carney was the only Cobber with double-figure kills with 13 on 25 attacks for a hitting percentage of .200. Mandy Mercil led two players with double-digit digs with 12, while Stephanie Baker followed with 10, and Jena Klaphake finished with 36 assists.
With tonight's win, the Tommies advance to the MIAC Semifinals for a date with Gustavus Adolphus in St. Peter on Thursday night. That match is set for a 7:00 pm start.
