St. Ben's "Blazers" 2012 Season Notes --Nov. 7

--Went 27-5 on the season, winning 15 straight at one point … had streaks of 15 and 17 consecutive set wins … went 10-1 to place second in the MIAC and was runner-up in the MIAC Tournament .. since Sept. 12, Blazers are 21-2 with only losses to St. Thomas.

--Playing in their second consecutive tournament and sixth in the last eight years, missing only 2006 and 2010 since the 2005 season … in 2008, the Blazers advanced to the Elite Eight.

--Blazers 27 wins is the most since 29 during the 2008 Elite Eight campaign … program wins record is 34 during the 1987 season … this season’s mark is tied with and 1992 and 1993 for seventh most all-time.

--The Blazers last NCAA tournament win came in the 2008 regional final where they won 3-1 over Concordia … they lost 3-2 in the first round to Luther in 2009, and 3-2 in the first round to St. Scholastica last season.

--Nicole Hess leads the Blazers in her third season in 2012, scoring her first career 20-win season, currently sitting at 27 … after turning around a struggling St. Catherine program, she took over Saint Benedict in 2010 … St. Kate’s won just three matches her first season, but won 19 and 18 respectively her final two seasons with Hess earning MIAC Coach of the Year honors in 2009 … in three seasons at CSB she is 63-30 overall and 24-9 in the MIAC … over the last five seasons she is 100-56 with a 35-20 MIAC mark.

--The Blazers’ entire starting line-up returns next season … juniors Lexi Alm, Kendra Coleman and Chelsea Rachel, and sophomores Taya Kockelman, Victoria Nass, Alexa Rinde and Sophie Stangl have seen the bulk of the duty this season … they have led the Blazers to the 20th best winning percentage in the country, as well as second place rankings for assists per set (12.75), digs per set (21.68) and kills per set (13.79).

--In the national rankings, Taya Kockelman ranks fourth in assists per set at 11.25 … Victoria Nass is fifth in digs per set at 6.21 … Lexi Alm is 27th in kills per set at 3.89 … In the MIAC play Alm led in kills per set (4.03) and was second in kills (153) … Kockelman led in both assists (446) and assists per set (11.74) … Alexa Rinde was fourth in the MIAC in attack percentage (.336).

--The Blazers went 3-5 against the regional field … 2-1 against UW-Stevens Point … 1-0 against UW-Eau Claire … 0-2 against Northwestern … 0-2 against St. Thomas … they have not faced Cornell, Dominican or Wartburg.

--Several Blazers are closing in on milestones … Lexi Alm’s 964 career kills leaver her 36 shy 1,000 and her 432 this season leave her 156 away from the CSB single season record of 588 … Victoria Nass’ 695 digs on the season are 31 away from the CSB record of 726, and her 974 career digs are just 26 away from 1,000 … Taya Kockelman went over 2,000 career assists in the playoff against Concordia, and her 1,249 on the season are 190 from the record of 1.439.

--The Blazers went 8-2 on the road this season with their only losses to St. Thomas … they went 11-2 in neutral site games with losses to UW-Stevens Point and Northwestern … at home they were 8-1.
