Wear Pink: Volleyball hosts fundraiser with Tues. game

September 30, 2008

The No. 6-ranked St. Thomas volleyball team will host "Dig for the Cure" tonight when it faces UW-Eau Claire in a 7 p.m. non-conference match at Schoenecker Arena. The event will raise money and awareness to find a cure for breast cancer, and fans are encouraged to wear pink.

There's no admission charge. Donations can be made on site -- checks should be written to the University of St. Thomas. Donors can pledge a flat rate or a per-dig rate.

The Tommies and Eau Claire played a five-set match earlier this month in the Augsburg tournament, and UST rallied from a two-set deficit. Eau Claire is 10-8, including a five-set win over St. Olaf last Saturday and four losses to nationally-ranked teams.

UST (14-1 overall) ran its conference unbeaten streak to 17 and season win string to 13 with two victories last week, and the Tommies now have 10 home matches scheduled from Sept. 30-Nov. 1. St. Thomas is 10-1 at home over the last two seasons.

Senior Katie Kremer now has 2,164 digs in 397 career games and ranks fourth in MIAC history in that category. Senior Katie McCaffrey was named MIAC Co-Hitter of the Week on Monday after she hit .493 and recorded 33 kills, five digs, three total blocks in two key road wins wins. Kremer and McCaffrey have helped the Tommies to a 101-20 record in their era.
