Volleyball Regional: Point tops Toms, wins regional

No. 19-ranked UW-Stevens Point (34-4) ran its season win streak to 23 and advanced to next week's eight-team national tournament with Saturday night's 3-1 victory over 2012 national champ and current No. 4-ranked St. Thomas.

The Pointers, who elimnated No. 6-ranked St. Ben's on Friday, capped a 3-0 run over three days as it took the regional crown with a 19-25, 25-14, 25-21, 25-19 decision.

For the winners, Allison Davis had 15 kills, hit .400 and nine blocks; Sarah Wildish had 11 kills and 10 digs; Alexis Hartman had 46 assists, nine digs, five blocks and three aces; Hannah Picel had 23 digs; and Emma Brunkhorst had nine kills. The Pointers hit .255.

The Pointers trailed 2-0 in sets and 8-3 in Thursday's opener against Wartburg before winning in five sets to start their championship run.

The Tommies (30-3) had a 12-match postseason win streak halted. It was the Tommies' lone loss in the last two seasons which didn't go to five sets (70-4 two-season record). Junior Kelly Foley had 22 kills, hit .487 and added five blocks. She was voted MVP of the all-tourney team with 72 kills in 12 sets in the tournament. Jill Greenfield had 15 kills and 12 digs. Nicole Potts had 10 kills and 16 digs.

Friday Nov. 15

Match 5, 4:30 p.m.: St. Ben's vs. UW-Stevens Point

No. 19-ranked Point (33-4) ran its season win streak to 22 as it advanced to Saturday's 7 p.m. regional championship match with a 3-1 win over No. 6-ranked St. Benedict (27-4). The match was tied 1-1 in sets and tied 23-23 in set three when the Pointers scored the final two for a 25-23 victory. The Pointers led 20-18 in the fourth set and got four kills down the stretch from senior Allison Davis to close out the match victory. Davis had 13 kills and hit .379 to pace the Pointers; Emma Brunkhorst had 14 kills and four assists; Krista Loos had 15 kills; Hannah Picel had 39 digs; and Alexis Hartman had 47 assists. The Blazers got 42 assists and 10 digs from Taya Kockelman; 17 kills and 19 digs from Lexi Alm; 31 digs from Victoria Nass; and 23 digs and eight kills from Chelsea Rachel.

Junior All-America Kelly Foley matched her career high with 25 kills and hit .524 to lead No. 4-ranked St. Thomas (30-2) to a 3-1 victory over No. 13-ranked Augsburg (29-5) in Friday night's regional volleyball semifinal match at UST Schoenecker Arena. The Tommies won 25-23, 18-25, 25-7, 25-14.

The Tommies used a 19-4 run to close the third set and used a 13-2 run to take control in the fourth set after leading just 11-10 early in the set.

The Tommies will face No. 17-ranked UW-Stevens Point (33-5), a 3-1 winner over No. 6-ranked St. Ben's, in Saturday's 7 p.m. regional final.

Mackenzie Piechowski had 10 kills; Nicole Potts had 14 digs and eight kills; Jill Greenfield had 15 digs and eight kills; and McKenna Reagan had 25 digs, for the Tommies who hit .336 on the match. UST has won 12 in a row this season and 12 consecutive post-season matches.

Augsburg, playing in its first ever regional semifinal match, hit .290 in the first two sets, but finished the match hitting .171. Colleen Ourada had 16 kills and nine digs while hitting .298; Ashley Peper had 10 kills and seven digs and Emily McCourt had 31 assists and nine digs.

Thursday Nov. 14

St. Ben’s def. Cornell (Iowa), 25-16, 25-16, 25-17 

The No. 6-ranked Blazers (27-3) hit .246 on the afternoon and ended a 16-match win streak for the Rams (28-4).. Lexi Alm 10 kills and 12 digs, Mary Franz had nine kills and hit .562 and Taya Kockelman added 36 assists for the Blazers, who are 16-0 this season against non-conference opponents... No. 20-ranked Cornell was led by Kathleen O'Connor's 11 kills and 13 digs. St. Ben’s advances to Friday’s 4:30 p.m. semifinal match against UW-Stevens Point.

UW-Stevens Point def. Wartburg, 21-25, 21-25, 25-20, 25-21, 15-12 

The No. 19-ranked Pointers (32-4) trailed 2-0 in sets and were down 8-3 early in set three before they turned momentum and claimed their 21st consecutive match victory of the season. They scored the last seven points of set three and last four of set four to force a fifth set. They trailed 10-7 in the deciding set but used a 7-0 run to take control. The Pointers’ Emma Brunkhorst had 24 kills and seven blocks and hit .435, while Krista Loos added 17 kills.

The No. 13-ranked Auggies (29-4), playing in their first regional volleyball tournament since 1982, hit .339 and advanced to Friday’s 7 p.m. semifinals with a 3-1 win over the No. 15-ranked Lutes (19-6). They will face the St. Thomas-Northwestern winner. Ashley Peper had 21 kills and hit .429, Colleen Ourada had 17 kils and hit .361 and Emily McCourt has 47 assists. Allison Wood had 13 kills and Lucy Capron had 12 kills and nine digs for Pacific Lutheran.

8:30 p.m.: St. Thomas def. Northwestern-St. Paul, 25-20, 24-26, 25-18, 25-17

Junior All-America Kelly Foley had a career-high 25 kills and hit .568 to lead No. 4-ranked St. Thomas (29-2) to a 3-1 victory over the Eagles (23-13) in Thursday night's quarterfinal match at UST's Schoenecker Arena. The Tommies will play at 7 p.m. Friday against No. 13-ranked Augsburg. Jill Greenfield had 15 kills and nine digs and McKenna Reagan had 28 digs. St. Thomas used a 9-1 run midway through the third set to take control and never trailed in the fourth set. The Toms have won 11 in a row this season and moved their postseason win streak to 11. Lizzy Potratz had 12 kills and hit .310 and Hallie Mueth had 10 kills and 11 digs for the Eagles.
