Schmitt sets career digs record; UST win streak ends at 12
October 26, 1999
No. 19-ranked St. Thomas won its first three matches in last weekend's UW-LaCrosse tournament before losing in three games to host LaCrosse. That loss ended a 12-match win streak by the Toms, now 18-9.
UST beat Viterbo (15-3, 15-4, 15-6) and Carroll (Wis.) (15-2, 11-15, 15-7, 15-4) on Friday, and beat St. Norbert (15-5, 15-13, 15-5) before falling to LaCrosse (15-6, 15-13, 15-8) on Saturday. LaCrosse is now 24-5 on the season.
UST senior Jenny Schmitt broke the school career record for digs on Friday and had 49 digs in 13 games on the weekend. She now has 1,559 career digs in 417 games. She also holds the UST career assist record with 4,094.
Schmitt was named MIAC Setter of the Week today -- the third such conference honor this season.
Seniors Jill Kraus had 51 kills, hit .382, had 44 digs and had 11 blocks; Kirsten Johnson had 31 kills, hit .366 and had 15 block; Rachel Myskevitz had 42 digs; and Michelle Domeyer had 13 service aces to lead the Tommies.
First-year UST coach Cole Tallman needs nine wins to reach 500 on his college coaching career -- he's now 491-150. He was head coach at Division I Furman the last six seasons, and his teams there were 152-72.
The Toms are 9-0 in the conference with two matches remaining. They can clinch the top seed for the No. 5-6 MIAC tournament with a victory Wednesday at St. Catherine (0-9) or a win Friday vs. St. Ben's. The MIAC championship, however, is determined by combining the regular-season results and the Nov. 5-6 post-season tournament.
The MIAC tournament winner gets the conference automatic qualifying berth into the NCAA playoffs. The last St. Thomas conference volleyball title and NCAA playoff berth came in 1992.
UST is 5-0 at home this season and has a 10-match home-court winning streak.
