Toms share MIAC volleyball title, miss NCAA playoffs

The St. Thomas volleyball team lost a five-game decision in the finals of the MIAC tournament Saturday evening at Macalester and had their season end with a 21-11 record.

The Toms (21-11) lost 15-8, 12-15, 9-15, 15-7, 15-10 to Bethel and shared the 1999 conference title with the Royals with an adjusted 20-2 record. As tournament champ, Bethel gets the automatic berth into the NCAA playoffs. No other MIAC teams were selected for the 48-team NCAA Division III playoffs. see Division III qualifiers

In the afternoon semifinals, UST beat St. Olaf in three close games to earn a spot in the 5:30 finals against Bethel. The Toms won 15-13, 16-14, 15-12. Bethel beat St. Ben's in three games in the other semifinal match.

Friday night, top-seed St. Thomas received a scare in the quarterfinals, but survived No. 9 seed Hamline with a five-game victory. The Toms won 15-8 in the decisive fifth game to climb to 20-10 on the season and move into Saturday's semifinals vs. St. Olaf. The Oles topped St. Mary's in four games while St. Ben's and Bethel each needed five games to outlast Macalester and Augsburg in the other qurterfinal matches.

Three UST players made the 15-player All-MIAC team -- seniors Jill Kraus, Rachel Myskevitz and Jenny Schmitt. Freshman Katie Reynolds was named honorable mention.
