Volleyball second at own weekend tourney

The St. Thomas volleyball team went 3-1 in the UST-KAT Invitational in Schoenecker Arena, The Tommies went 1-1 Friday and 2-0 on Saturday.

Loras won the five-team tournament. The Duhawks also went 3-1 but edged the Tommies in five games Friday to claim the tie-breaker. The Tommies were one point away from winning the match in game four but Loras scored the final five points to win 31-29. Loras then won the deciding fifth game 15-6.

The Tommies (11-1) also beat Macalester and UW-River Falls in three games each and topped Texas Lutheran in four games. UST had three players make the all-tournament team -- senior hitter Katie Reynolds, junior setter Jane Gibbs and freshman Erika Wetzel.

The Tommies open MIAC play Wednesday at home vs. St. Olaf. A 6 p.m. junior-varsity match precedes the 7:30 p.m. varsity match.

Saturday Highlights:
.Loras (10-3) won the two-day St. Thomas volleyball Invitational with a 3-1 record. The Duhawks edged host St. Thomas (11-1) for the championship after both went 3-1. Loras beat St. Thomas in five games Friday. Macalester (5-8) edged UW-River Falls (9-3) for third place and Texas Lutheran (3-7) was fifth.

St. Thomas (9-1), UW-River Falls (8-2) and Macalester (4-7) all go 1-1 on the day. Texas Lutheran (3-5) goes 0-2, losing a pair of four-game decisions.

The round-robin tourney continues Saturday in St. Paul, Minn.
