Volleyball beats two ranked teams, now 17-2

The 13th-ranked St. Thomas volleyball team moved to 17-2 on the season by winning three of four matches in the St. Paul Midseason National Preview tournament held at the Macalester Fieldhouse.

Saturday, the Tommies lost a five-game decision to No. 7-ranked Cal State-Hayward 30-28, 28-30, 30-24, 26-30 and 15-8. They bounced back to beat No. 16 Central (Iowa) in three games, 32-30, 30-24, 30-21.

St. Thomas, Hayward and Central all went 3-1 in the seven-team tournament.

Coach Thanh Pham's team, which leads the MIAC at 5-0, plays at Macalester Wednesday then travels to Ohio for another challenging tournament next weekend.

Tommie senior All-American setter Jane Gibbs was named to the all-tournament team.


Friday
No. 18-ranked Central and co-hosts St. Thomas and Macalester all went 2-0 on the day to open the two-day, seven-team event. The Tommies edged No. 8 UW-Whitewater (13-6), the 2002 national champion, in four games and topped unranked Loras in three games. The Toms topped Whitewater 30-28, 30-23, 28-30 and 30-27, then beat Loras 30-23, 30-25, 30-21.

No. 7-ranked Cal State-Hayward, an NCAA final eight team in 2002, topped Whitweater in four games but lost to Central. The Flying Dutch also beat Bethel. Macalester beat Loras and Bethel.

Saturday, the Tommies play Hayward (9 a.m.) and Central (3 p.m.).
