October 9, 2004
The St. Thomas volleyball team finished 2-2 vs. Iowa Conference foes in the two-day Border Battle tournament which finished Saturday at Macalester's Fieldhouse. The Tommies posted a five-game win over No. 8-rated Central -- 39-37, 30-25, 17-30, 32-34, 15-8. The 39-37 victory in game one was the highest scoring game in MIAC history and seventh highest scoring game in D-III history.
Earlier Saturday, UST fell to Wartburg 30-21, 30-11, 30-26.
St. Thomas (12-9) avenged a three-game loss to Central incurred last month in St. Louis. Central played three five-game matches and one four-gamer in a 2-2 weekend that dropped it to 16-5 overall.
Concordia-Moorhead went 4-0 and had the tournament's best showing.
The Toms opened Friday day with a 3-0 win over Loras and five-game loss to Simpson. They lost game one to Simpson but won the next two games before losing the match with a 15-9 count in the deciding fifth game.
The Tommies play host to Carleton in a key MIAC match Wednesday night in Schoenecker Arena.
