Sat. NCAA Volleyball: Toms lose 3-0

Top-seeded Washington (Mo.) scored a 30-27, 30-24, 30-25 victory over second-seeded St. Thomas in Saturday's NCAA regional volleyball championship match at UST's Schoenecker Arena.

The Bears (35-1) advance to the NCAA quarterfinal round for the 18th time in 19 seasons and improved their all-time NCAA playoff record to 66-11. St. Thomas (30-7) ended its season and had a 10-match home winning streak halted.

Megan Houck had 11 kills and four blocks; Emilie Walk had 11 kills and eight blocks; Whitney Smith had 10 kills, three aces and five blocks; Amy Bommarito had 16 digs; and Kara Liefer had 38 assists, seven kills and seven digs.

For the Tommies, Rachelle Dosch and Kristin Storrs each had nine kills; Ann Eibensteiner had seven blocks; Katie Kremer had 10 digs.

Washington won game one 30-27 as they scored the final three points of the match. The Tommies led in game two 14-9 and 21-20 but a 5-0 run helped the Bears post a 30-24 victory. Another late 5-0 run put the Bears ahead 29-23 in their clinching game-three victory.
