First-team All-America honors for VB's McCaffrey

St. Thomas middle blocker Katie McCaffrey (JR-Fort Collins, Colo.) today was announced as a first-team All-American as chosen by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA). A total of 36 players were recognized as All-Americans, 12 per team.

It's the ninth All-America award received by a Tommie volleyball player, all since 1991, and seventh in the last six seasons.

Bethel's Liz Glesne was a second-team honoree.

McCaffrey also was named second-team CoSIDA Academic All-District. She has a 3.86 grade-point average in Mathematics.

St. Thomas is 87-19 in McCaffrey’s three-year era. She helped UST win the MIAC regular-season and playoff titles and reach the NCAA Sweet 16.

McCaffrey finished the season with 466 kills and and 176 blocks while hitting .404 in 118 games. She ranks sixth in Division III in blocks per game and fifth in attack percentage, and had five double-doubles in kills and blocks.

The Toms ended its season 28-5 after it fell 15-13 in game five in the region finals to UW-Whitewater, which placed first and third in the nation the last two seasons. That included a 14-0 mark vs. conference teams and a sweep of the MIAC regular-season and playoff championships.
