Senior All-American Katie Theisen took first in a field of 139 runners to lead the No. 21-ranked Tommie
women's cross country team to first place out of 12 teams at Friday's St. John's Invitational in Collegeville.
UST opened its season by putting seven runners in the top 15 and scoring 33 points. The Tommies topped closest pursuers St. Benedict (43), Winona State (71) and St. Cloud State (135).
Theisen clocked 22:54 for 6,000 meters and outran runner-up Jenna Southworth of Winona State by 10 seconds. It was Theisen's fourth cross country individual victory in 15 career races. Her resume also includes placing 38th and 20th at NCAA meets; taking fourth and eighth in 400-runner fields at the U of M' sGriak Invitationals; three runner-up finishes; and top-eight placings in all 13 non-national meets.
Junior Kelly Russ took fifth in 23:22; sophomore Allie Metzler placed eighth in 23:42; freshman Emma Spoon was 11th in 24:07; sophomore Raynee DeGrio was 12th in 24:15; freshman Nikki Schminski was 13th in 24:15 and sophomore Helen Shea placed 15th in 24:23. otrher top-40 finishers for UST were sophomores Alyssa Rassett-Mehl, 23rd in 24:49; freshman Abby Yeomans, 33rd in 25:26; and junior Al Johnson, 25:32.
The Tommies will compete Sept. 27 in the U of M Gopher Griak Invite in Falcon Heights.
