Women's Golf places 3rd at first tourney of fall

The St. Thomas women's golf team finished in third place at the 25-team UW-Eau Claire Invitational. The two-day, 36-hole event, the Tommies' first competition of the fall season, concluded Sunday

Gustavus (314-332/646) edged Wartburg (313-334/647) for the team title. St. Thomas (318-343/661), UW-Stevens Point (319-347/666) and UW-Eau Claire (330-346/376) placed 3-4-5. UST was just five strokes out of the lead after day one.

Tommie junior All-American Laura Heck shot a 76-85/161 and tied for seventh in a field of 141 players. Stephanie Hird shot 80-84/164 to tie for 13th. Sophomore transfer Chelsa Dooley shot 80-85/165. Megan Owens shot 82-89/171 to tie for 27th. Amy Anderson shot 84-89/173 to tie for 40th. Two Tommies are playing as individuals -- freshman Shannon Richter shot 84-91 and Stephanie Kreb shot 86-95.

UST plays next Saturday and Sunday in the Wartburg Invite in Waverly, Iowa.

The Tommies are ranked seventh in the Division III preseason poll after graduating All-American Holly Noble, 2X All-MIAC player Laura Klatt and senior Katie Potts. UST's Katie Mich is on study abroad this fall.
