Women's Golf 2nd at MIACs; Heck is medalist

The St. Thomas women's golf team took second place, nine strokes out of first, at the MIAC Championships, which concluded a three-day run Monday in Coon Rapids. Gustavus ended the Tommies' seven-year consecutive run of conference tournament titles. UST now has nine top-two finsihes in a  row.

No. 2-ranked Gustavus (324-333-323/980) won its first MIAC team title after taking second place four years in a row. The No. 7-ranked Tommie had one player disaqualified on Monday yet still came within nine strokes.

Tommie junior All-American Laura Heck repeated as medalist as she shot 77-81-80/238 to win by five strokes and beat the other 49 players in the field. It was Heck's fourth consecutive meet medalist honor of the fall season. Heck becomes the fourth player to win two MIAC medalist honors and gives St. Thomas the medalist crown for the sixth time in seven seasons.

Chelsa Dooley started the day tied for eighth with rounds of 83-84/167 but was disaqualified. Megan Owens placed 12th after shooting 80-88-86/246; Amy Anderson took 13th with rounds of 88-86-81/255; and Steph Hird tied for 16th after shooting 97-84-79/260.

The Tommies shot 328-335 in their first two rounds and trail leader Gustavus (324-333) by six. Carleton (693) and Macalester (696) are third and fourth in the 10-team event. The tournament continues with 18 holes on Monday.

Last year's MIAC medalist, Tommie junior Laura Heck, shot 77-81 thus far and holds a six-stroke lead in a field of 50 players. Chelsa Dooley is tied for eighth with rounds of 83-84/167; Megan Owens is 11th after shooting 80-88/168; Amy Anderson shot 88-86/174 and is tied for 15th; and Steph Hird shot 97-84/181.

Megan Owens shot 80 and is tied for third; Chelsa Dooley shot 83 and is tied for eighth; Amy Anderson shot 88 and is tied for 16th; and Steph Hird shot 97.
