Women's Golf gets second, Heck is medalist

Junior All-American Laura Heck won medalist honors for the second week in a row to help No. 7-ranked St. Thomas share second place out of 15 teams at the Midwest Classic tournament, which concluded a two-day, 36-hole run on Sunday in Ham Lake.

No. 3-ranked Gustavus shot 318-334-652 to win by 31 strokes. St. Thomas (343-340/683) and UW-Eau Claire (356-327/683) topped fourth-place St. Ben's (699) by 16 strokes. Wartburg (702(, St. Olaf (704), Luther (705), Macalester (709) and Carleton (710) rounded out the top nine teams.

Heck shot 78 on Sunday -- one of just three in the field of 98 players to break 80 in the final round. After her 79 on Saturday Heck started the final round three strokes out of the lead. She won medalist honors last weeekend in a field of 100 at the Wartburg tournament.

UST had seven others competing -- Chelsa Dooley shot 84-82/166 and Player Picfinished tied for ninth; Amy Anderson shot 89-86/175 to take 26th; Megan Owens shot 91-94/185; and Stephanie Hird shot 95-94/189; Tommies who played as individuals were Stephanie Kreb (92-87/179), Kelly Westerham (94-96/190); and Shannon Richter (95-93/188).

St. Thomas is idle next weekend and plays Sept. 26-27 at the UW-Stevens Point Invite.

St. Thomas sits in second place out of 15 teams, 25 shots behind first-place Gustavus, at the halfway point of the Midwest Classic women's golf tournament in Ham Lake. The 36-hole tourney concludes Sunday.

The No. 3-ranked Gusties shot 318 to No. 7 St. Thomas' 343. Concordia-Moorhead (349), St. Olaf (354, Wartburg (355), UW-Eau Claire, St. Ben's and Macalester (all 356) and Carleton (362) round out the top nine teams.

Laura Heck shot 79 and is in fifth place out of 97 players, three strokes behind leader Kimbra Kosak of Gustavus. Chelsa Dooley shot 84; Amy Anderson shot 89; Megan Owens shot 91; and Stephanie Hird shot 95. Three Tommies are playing as individuals -- Stephanie Kreb shot 92, Kelly Westerham shot 94; and Shannon Richter shot 95.
