W. Hockey sweeps its way into second place

W, 5-2
at St. Olaf (W), January 27, 2013

Freshman Courtney Umland scored the go-ahead and insurance goals to lead the Tommie women’s hockey team to Sunday’s 5-2 MIAC win over St. Olaf and a sweep of their weekend series.

Christina Rozeske scored a short-handed goal for the Tommies (8-5-1 overall, 7-3 MIAC), who have won five consecutive MIAC games. They moved alone into second place with eight games left.

Umland scored with eight seconds left in the second period to break a 2-2 tie. She scored another on the power play 4:12 into the third. UST added an empty-net goal.

Over the last 10 days, the Tommies have outscored opponents 17-3 in a 4-0 run. Junior Alise Riedel stopped 29 of 31 shots on Sunday after making 25 saves in Saturday’s 4-0 win. She’s had 99 saves with just three goals allowed in the last four games, and recorded her 30th career victory.

St. Thomas plays third-place Bethel next Friday night on home ice.
