Women's Hockey gets sweep of CSC
Freshmen Tanaya Reitz and Maureen Hardwick each had two goals and freshman goalie Becky Kilpatrick stopped 24 of 25 shots as the St. Thomas women's hockey team scored a 5-1 win over visiting St. Catherine in MIAC play Monday night at Parade Ice Garden in Minneapolis.
That completed a weekend sweep of the Wildcats and moved No. 10-ranked UST one step cloer to the conference championship.
St. Thomas (16-4-1 overall, 13-0-1 MIAC) improved to 10-0 at home this season and extended its lead over second-place Gustavus to six points with four games remaining. St. Catheirne dropped to 9-9-3 (7-6-1 MIAC).
The Tommies are 21-0-1 in their last 22 MIAC regular-season games dating back to January 2002.
Coach Kevin Gorg's Tommies can clinch the first MIAC championship in the five-year history of the program as early as next weekend -- UST needs two wins, or one win and one Gustavus loss to lock up the outright title. The Toms play St. Ben's Friday at home and Sunday away, then finish the regular-season with a series vs. St. Mary's Feb. 21-22. Gustavus plays third-place Concordia this Friday and Saturday.
The Toms went up 2-0 on first-period goals by Hardwick and Reitz. Sue Heinmiller scored early in the second frame for a 3-0 lead, and Reitz made it 4-0 midway through the second. CSC's Angie Carstenbrock scored an unassisted goal at 1:03 of the third. Hardwick capped the scoring with an unassisted goal at 16:56.
