Sophomore Regina Horak broke a 1-1 tie with a goal in the 52nd minute to lead the visiting Tommie women's soccer team to a 3-1 victory over host Gustavus on a wet, cold Wednesday in MIAC play in St. Peter.
Senior Erin Sprangers added a clinching goal in the 90th minute for the 24th-ranked Tommies (12-2-1 overall, 7-0-1 MIAC). Senior Kirsten Moran assisted on all three goals.
UST, which never trailed, extended its conference regular-season unbeaten streak to 20, including three consecutive wins over the Gusties.
St. Thomas, 10-0-1 in its last 11 games this season, pulled within two points of first-place Concordia-Moorhead as the conference race moves into its final 11 days.
Freshman Anna Strehlow scored in the 22nd minute to give UST an early lead. The Toms had a 6-1 edge in corner kicks and a 11-3 advantage in shots on goal. Sophomore Allie Byron was in goal for the Tommies.
Over the last three seasons under Coach Sheila McGill, UST is 9-0 when Horak scores a goal, and 22-0 when Sprangers scores a goal. All nine of Horak's career goals have been the official game winners.
St. Thomas plays at home Saturday against Macalester (1 p.m.).
