The unbeaten Tommie women's soccer team (8-0-3) moved up one spot to No. 5 in this week's NCAA Central Region rankings by the National Soccer Coaches' Association of America.
UW-Eau Claire, Wheaton (Ill.), Washington (Mo.), UW-Stevens Point, St. Thomas and Wartburg (Iowa)
hold the top six spots.
St. Thomas remains unbeaten despite playing eight of its first 11 games on the road. UST has its longest unbeaten streak since the 2002 Toms went 13-0-1 in a late run to reach the NCAA quarterfinals. Coach Sheila McGill's Tommies are 9-0-3 in their last 12 games since the end of 2007, including three overtime wins.
St. Thomas is 12-0 over the last two seasons when Erin Sprangers scores a goal. The junior has eight goals and three assists in 11 games after scoring five goals in 2007.
UST has scored first in 19 of the 27 games over the last two seasons. Last season at this point, an injury-plagued Tommie team was 2-4 in the conference en route to a sixth-place finish at 5-5-1.
The Toms have a makeup game Thursday at home vs. St. Mary's (4 p.m.) and play next Tuesday night at Macalester.
