
Sophomore Hannah Gikling came off the bench to score two goals in a 70-second span late in the game to lift the host Tommies (9-0-3 overall, 6-0-2 MIAC) to a 2-0 victory over visiting St. Mary's (4-8-1, 0-8) in conference women's soccer play at UST's South Field.
St. Thomas outshot the Cardinals in on-goal tries 10-1 and had a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks. Mariana Sanchez had eight saves for St. Mary's, while Amanda Domeier had one save for UST.
The game was scoreless through 77 minutes but Gikling recorded her first goal of the season (and second of her career) at 77:20, assisted by Kirsten Moran. Moments later at 78:30, Gikling scored again on a header, assisted by Stephanie Paasch.
The Tommies, who opened up a three-point lead atop the conference standings, has outscored seven MIAC opponents 15-2. They've allowed just one goal in the last nine halves of soccer, covering 415 clock minutes. 
St. Thomas is off this weekend and plays Tuesday night at Macalester.
In the four fall team sports of soccer, volleyball and football, St. Thomas is now a combined 39-5-4.
